My interest in “Boards and Commissions” stemmed from the Lansing Housing Commission sale of the “scattered houses” in Lansing. It was the first time I really understood the phrase “poverty is a policy decision.” I watched people in meeting after meeting express their concerns but end up ignored. I watch things just happen with no transparency or equity. I watched generational wealth in our community disappear even more.
This list represents what I would like to study and understand to see if it should be revised to help with the overall mission.
Appointments and rotation
- City Council Members appoint
- Should there be a maximum number of years one can serve
- Conflicts of interest
Hiring of the Executive Directors
# of members
- Might correlate with how city council becomes structured, e.g. number of wards
Paid positions (capacity of those below ALICE)
- People who live below the ALICE threshold will have a harder time of serving because they cannot afford to
One response to “Boards and Commissions”
2/26/24 City Council Agenda, two board (re)appointments. One does not expire until 2030. What was the source of these appointments? Where are the records? https://lansingmi.portal.civicclerk.com/event/5927/files/agenda/7595
Also want to comment, I do not know the people being appointed, nor the responsibilities. I have no opinion on whether they should or should not be appointed. I am just learning the process.
